Refractory cement is composed of a mixture of materials, including alumina, silica, lime, and other additives. These components are carefully selected to provide high temperature resistance, thermal shock resistance, and excellent bonding properties.

Refractory castables comprise a large and diverse group of materials in the family of monolithic (shapeless) refractories. Their use has grown significantly in the past 30 years. Progressing from simple mixes, refractory castables today comprise some very complex and technical formulations, finding use in a variety of very  demanding and severe applications. Refractory castables are premixed combinations of refractory aggregates, matrix components or modifiers, bonding agents, and admixtures (Fig 1). They are mixed with a liquid (usually water) at the point of installation and vibrated, poured, pumped, or pneumatically shot into place to form a refractory shape or structure that becomes rigid because of hydraulic or chemical setting. The majority of refractory castables use calcium aluminate cement as the bonding agent though in recent years other bonding agents have also been developed. All castables have refractory aggregates and matrix components which allow their use to temperatures up to 1850 deg C.

The Insulating Fire Brick (IFB) is a type of soft brick made of refractory ceramic material, a blend of alumina and silica, that can withstand extremely high temperature applications and has a low thermal conductivity. This IFB is an excellent insulator and reflects heat well. Insulating Refractory Fire Bricks are light in weight and can be easily cut by handheld hack saw or any other hand tool like chisel or drill. They are ideal for creating custom shapes and cavities.

Ceramic fibres are also often called either RCF (Refractory Ceramic Fibre) or ASW (Alumina Silicate Wool) fibres and are especially pure high temperature glass fibers (HTGF). Ceramic fibres are characterized by high flexibility, extreme less weight, less thermal conductivity and heat storage. Ceramic fibres have excellent thermal shock resistance and are suitable for permanent high temperature use at critical conditions. Due to the purity ceramic fibres have a high chemical resistance with regard to a lot of substances (except Fluoride and Phosphorous compounds, Alkalis) and are available in many different product forms and classification temperatures typically in between 1250° C and 1600°C.
